Lagos History

Origin

Lagos was a settlement the of Aworii people called Ekoo, whose name was derived from Oko (farm). The present day Lagos state has a high percentage of this sub-group who actually migrated to the area from Isheri along the Ogun riverr. Throughout the history of Lagos many Tribes conqured and settled in the Area. During its early history, it also saw periods of rule by the Kingdom of Benin. 

Contact with the Outside world

Portuguese explore rSequeira visited the area in 1472 , naming the area around the city Lagos, meaning lakes. From 1704-1851 it served as a major center of the slave trade. In 1841 Oba Akitoye ascended on to the throne of Lagos and tried to bring an end to slave trading by placing a ban on the act.

Mornachy and Rule

Lagos merchants, most notably Madam Tinubu, resisted the ban, deposed the king and installed his brother Oba Kosoko. Oba Akitoye while on exile met with the British who had banned slave trading in 1807, and got their backing to regain his throne. In 1851 he was reinstalled as the Oba of Lagos. Soon After

Conclusion

Soon after Lagos became the capital of Nigeria many people flocked in from all parts of Nigeria, and with the stalled growth by greedy and Brutal Government, the city couldn't cope. Many slums opened up due to unemployment and poor living standards plagued the city, but with new economic reforms things are changing for the better, Nigeria is a country of instability, it was in past and it is unfortunately presently but some stay optimistic and dream of a better day.

Lagos grew from a Village meant solely for trade to the financial capital of West Africa. Despite the transfer of capital to Abuja, in Central Nigeria, Lagos retains that record but it's losing ground and fast. Most of Nigeria's biggest companies are located in Lagos Nigeria, because of it's huge growth into a megapolis most of Nigeria's entertainment is located there precisely in Victoria Island(A Surburb for the rich and wealthy), It features a large stadium, Shopping venues, a national theatre, and a growing nightlife.
